ASHY-HEADED GOOSE Chloephaga poliocephala

Ashy- headed geese are rare visitors to the Falklands that occassionally breed.

Males are slightly larger than females but otherwise they are alike. Length 55- 61 cm, (21.5 - 24 inches) Marginally larger than the similar Ruddy-headed goose, but easily recognised by its distinctive ashy grey head and reddish chestnut mantle and upper breast. and its white belly.  White eye ring. Yellow legs.

Resident/ vagrant on the Falkland Islands. Breeds in Southern and Western Patagonia, ranging as far north as Buenos Aires province.
